[Solved] Standard SATA AHCI Controller Driver Issue in Device Manager Windows 10. After upgrade from Windows 7, 8 to Windows 10, all the drivers will update including the SATA AHCI Controller to compatible with the new system. Generation 1 virtual machines have a SCSI controller by default. You can have up to four virtual SCSI controllers in a virtual machine. Each controller has 64 locations or targets. Each target could have a 64 TB VHDX file. In theory you could have 256 * 64 TB of virtual storage for data in a virtual machine! I'm going through the MB drivers now to make sure they are the most current and I noticed that under: 'device manager>PC>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers' I have two 'Asmedia 106x SATA Controller's, then three 'ATA Channel 0's, then three 'ATA Channel 1's and finally 'Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller'.
IDE may refer to any of the following:
1. Short for Integrated Drive Electronics, IDE is more commonly known as ATA or PATA (parallel ATA). It is a standard interface for IBM computers that was first developed by Western Digital and Compaq in 1986 for compatible hard drives and CD or DVD drives. IDE is different than SCSI and ESDI (Enhanced Small Disk Interface) because its controllers are on each drive, meaning the drive can connect directly to the motherboard or controller. IDE and its updated successor, EIDE (Enhanced IDE), are common drive interfaces found in IBM compatible computers. Below is a picture of the IDE connector on the back of a hard drive, a picture of what an IDE cable looks like, and the IDE channels it connects to on the motherboard.
Note
The location of the 1 pin (first pin) on an IDE cable is usually designated by the red stripe on one side of the cable. In the example picture above, the 1 pin is on the right side of the cable.
How many drives can each IDE channel support?
Each IDE channel can support two drives. A single IDE ribbon cable has three connection. One connection connects to the motherboard and the other two connections are available for the two drives.

2. Alternatively referred to as IDLE, IDE is short for integrated development environment, and are visual tools that allow programmers to develop programs more efficiently. Commonly, an IDE may have a compiler, debugger, text editor, and other integrated tools. Smalltalk was the first programming language to have a first true IDE.

IDE (Integrated Device Electronics) is a standardized interfacefor data storage devices in computer systems. It is so namedbecause much of the logic circuitry is integrated into the deviceitself. IDE is most commonly used for hard drives and CD or DVDdrives, but has also been used for tape drives and zip drives.
An IDE controller is the primary interface (usually integratedinto the motherboard) which any IDE devices will be plugged into.It handles the flow of data to and from these devices. It usuallyconsists of two connections (known as IDE channels) both of whichcan handle up to 2 devices each. It is also possible to add moreIDE controllers in the form of PCI or PCI-E cards, these areusually referred to as IDE controller cards. This is often done toenable more storage devices to be installed into the system, butmay also be done to replace an obsolete or malfuntioning on-boardIDE controller.

What is the function of IDE controller card?
An IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) is the controlling interface for the hard disc or optical drive (CD ROM etc.). The controller was integrated (hence the name) into the hard disc unit rather than being mounted on the computers motherboard. The first IDE units appeared in 1986 and has been replaced by the ATAPI (SATA) drives today. Read More
Should ide be master or slave with sata master?![]()
SATA and IDE are operated on different buses, with different controllers. A SATA drive is not considered a 'master' or a 'slave'; it has a channel all to itself. If the IDE drive is by itself on the controller, it should be set as Master. Read More
How many IDE devices can you have?
Short answer: Four A much more precise answer: The IDE standard allows for two devices to share a single IDE channel. The most common configuration is for there to be two IDE channels on the motherboard, allowing for a total of four devices. It is possible however, to add more IDE channels, usually in the form of PCI add-on IDE controller cards and have literally dozens of IDE devices in a single computer system. Read More
How many IDE devices can a motherboard handle?
This is dependent on the number of IDE controllers on the board. Older motherboards had two controllers, allowing a maximum of four IDE devices. Newer motherboards often only have one controller, allowing for a maximum of two devices. Read More

What is the hard drive controller connector? What standard must an ide bus controller and CD-ROM drive support in order to boot from CD?Parallel ATA is also called what standard?
Parallel ATA (sometimes called PATA) is synonymous with IDE or EIDE (Integrated Drive Electronics or Enhance Integrated Drive Electronics). IDE was the first technology to include the controller and hard drive in the same housing; previously with SCSI, MFM and RLL drives, the drive and the controller were separate. Read More

Does windows 2000 support sata drives?
Windows 2000 has no native support for SATA drives. If you have a slipstreamed CD with service pack 4, and the drivers for the SATA controller, you can install it. If not, you will have to run the SATA controller in emulation mode, so that Windows 2000 thinks that it is an IDE drive. Read More
